Why Ignoring Bouncebacks Can Ruin Your Email Success

If you use email, chances are you have seen a "bounceback" message in your inbox. You get one whenever you send an email to someone and then -- for whatever reason -- their server rejects the message.

The "bounceback" message usually contains the original email you sent, as well as an explanation as to why the message was rejected.

There are two types of bouncebacks you need to know about:

Type #1: Hard Bouncebacks

A hard bounceback occurs when you send a message to an email account that no longer exists. The account has been closed for some reason, so the mail server that hosted the account will send your message back, notifying you of this change.

Hard bouncebacks are particularly common when you send mail to free email accounts with providers such as Hotmail, Gmail, and Yahoo. That's because many people use these free accounts as a secondary or disposable account for random newsletter subscriptions and such.

When the volume of email to their free account gets too high, people often shut it down, create a new one, and move on.

But unfortunately -- if they forget to send you their new address -- you're stuck with an email address that no longer exists!

Type #2: Soft Bouncebacks

A soft bounceback occurs when you send an email to an account that is still valid but is temporarily unable to receive email. The most common cause of soft bouncebacks is when an email account is too full or the server that hosts the account is temporarily down.

Why You need to Manage Your Bouncebacks

Because soft bouncebacks are generated when an email account is still valid, you don't need to remove them from your email list. Where you want to focus your attention is on hard bouncebacks.

In order to maintain the highest deliverability, you need to constantly remove hard bouncebacks from your email list.

If you continue to send email to addresses that are no longer valid, the ISPs (Internet service providers) that previously hosted those addresses may consider you a spammer -- and block ALL the email you send to any other email accounts they host.

For example, let's say I have 1000 @yahoo.com addresses on my email list and over a period of 6 months 100 of those email accounts are closed and become invalid.

If I still continue to send email to those invalid accounts, Yahoo will assume that I'm a spammer sending unsolicited email to random accounts -- and they will block any emails I send to the 900 remaining valid accounts.

Ouch!

The process of managing your bouncebacks is called "list hygiene." In order to get the highest amount of email delivered to your subscribers, you want to stay on top of your list hygiene and remove email addresses from your list as soon as you get a hard bounceback after sending to them.

Automate the Process

As your list grows, you'll want to invest in some software that will help you categorize and manage your bouncebacks.

Most email software packages or services provide this feature. If yours doesn't, then it's probably time to upgrade!

Don't Forget to Follow up and Get the New Address!

If you do get a hard bounceback from a previous customer, be sure to follow up with them via phone or even snail mail to get their updated information.

All your customers are valuable and you don't want to lose a single one from your list! The time you invest getting their updated email address is typically time well spent.

"Are free online marketing communities a waste of time?"

Recently I've been getting lots of questions about my exclusive online marketing community, the Internet Entrepreneur Club. Some people want to know why they should bother joining my online community, as opposed to all the "free" marketing forums that are spreading all over the Internet.

That's a good question!

You can get decent information on some of these free sites -- if you're lucky enough to have an experienced Internet marketer provide an answer to your question.

However... in my experience, all too often the members are mostly beginners who have yet to make their first dollar online. And as helpful as these people want to be, they're probably not going to be able to offer you a whole lot of useful advice.

After all, they're still struggling to learn the basics themselves!

OR, the members are mostly advanced marketers who are looking for extremely high-level information and don't have time to provide lengthy answers to questions from beginners.

(For example, I've seen a lot of advanced marketers answer beginner questions with snappy responses like, "Look it up on Google, Brainiac!" NOT very helpful, in my opinion.)

The thing to remember is, time is precious. And the people who join free online marketing communities are mostly in it for themselves. They will share information with their peers -- in order to get some good tips and strategies for themselves.

But they're not going to bend over backwards to provide detailed, quality advice to beginners who can't offer them anything in return.

So in order to help you determine which online marketing communities are worth joining -- and which are a colossal waste of time -- here are three questions you need to ask before getting involved in any of them...

Question #1: Are your questions guaranteed to be answered by an experienced Internet marketing professional?

Let's face it... Other Internet marketers can be a useful source of information -- provided they have actual experience running successful online businesses!

You don't want to get involved in a community where the only suggestions you get are from people who are simply parroting things they've read online, without ever having tried the strategies for themselves.

So when someone offers you a piece of advice, ask them for REAL PROOF they know it actually works. If they can't provide it, it's time to move on.

Question #2: Are your questions guaranteed to be answered within a specific time frame?

I've seen it happen again and again -- people join an online marketing community desperate for advice from a seasoned marketing professional. So they post their most pressing questions and wait impatiently for someone to answer them.

And they wait... And wait... And wait...

... Meanwhile, they're losing out on potential sales because they're not taking any decisive action with their websites!

Question #3: Will the "experts" give you a detailed analysis of your website -- and offer concrete suggestions for improvement?

If you could ask just ONE question of a successful Internet marketer, here's what it should be:

"Will you review my website?"

If they say no, then my advice to you is: find another community to join.

Without a doubt, you'll get more value out of a detailed website review than any other information a seasoned professional can offer.

A reputable online expert will give your site a full "diagnostic" -- and let you know exactly what changes you need to make to your site design and salescopy to improve your conversions.

By asking these three questions, you can make sure you join a community populated with real Internet marketing professionals who will deliver real advice -- and help you get REAL results!

To be honest, I don't know of any free online community where you're guaranteed to get answers to all your questions from successful online marketers in a specific timeframe.

And I definitely don't know of any free community where the experts will "go to town" on your website and tell you everything you need to do to take it to peak performance levels in as little time as possible.

Blogging 101

These days, blogging has become a staple part of many online businesses. Yet I still get regular questions from my students and Internet Entrepreneur Club members asking, "why do I need a blog?"

At first glance, a blog is really just an online journal that displays a series of posts, displayed in chronological order. These posts are typically written in a conversational, informal tone, and don't contain any overt advertising messages.

So if you sell widgets on the Internet, why the heck do you need a blog? What value is it going to add to your business, aside from being one more thing to put on your "to-do" list?

Let me answer that for you! Here are the two main reasons you need to have a blog as part of your online business:

Reason #1: Blogs add personality to your business!

The Internet is an extremely impersonal business medium, and any opportunity you get to give your business some personality will increase your sales.

Fact: People like to buy products from people (not machines!).

If you use a blog to give your business a "voice," your customers will get a better sense of who the guy or gal behind the business really is. That'll help you build a stronger relationship with your customers -- and that will improve your sales!

Just remember: Your blog should not be written in fancy business lingo! It should be extremely conversational and personal.

Your readers should feel as if you're speaking directly to them -- sharing personal stories, useful tidbits of information, your thoughts on new developments in the industry -- whatever your readers will find useful and informative.

Also, your blog posts don't have to be long articles! In fact, you'll be better off if they're not. Most popular bloggers keep their posts to 400-500 words maximum, and many of their posts are often much shorter.

Reason #2: Blogs help you get listed in Google quickly!

The 'Net's top search engines love sites that have new, original content being added on a regular basis -- and that means they LOVE blogs.

Why "submitting" your site to Google does NOT work!

This week I want to demystify another Google idiosyncrasy...

If you go to www.Google.com/addurl, you'll find a nice little page where Google lets you submit your URL to be reviewed -- and if all goes well, you will be listed in their database under the keywords you've optimized your website for.

So it only seems logical to go to this page and submit your site when you want to get listed in Google's database, right?

Wrong.

Unfortunately, "logic" and "Google" don't always go hand in hand. The fact is, if you optimize your website and submit it to Google, your chances of showing up in their database any time in the next century is slim to none!

However, all is not lost! There are some little-known SEO strategies that will help you get listed in Google as quickly as possible. And today I'm going to tell you what they are.

Now, for the following strategies to make sense, you need to shift the way you think about "Search Engine Submission."

In the past, all you needed to do was go to the search engine and fill out a submission form, then the search engine would send its "spiders" to your website to review your content and index it accordingly. That's how it still works for many of the smaller search engines -- but not for Google.

These days, in order to get your site listed in Google, you don't want to submit your website directly to Google. Instead, you want Google's spiders to "stumble" across your website on their travels through the Web.

But you don't have to sit back and wait helplessly for the spiders to come!

By putting links to your site on high-traffic web pages, you can make sure that Google finds your site in a matter of weeks -- instead of months.

This doesn't mean you should put your URL all over random websites on the Internet. In fact, if Google finds a link to your website on a web page that's using malicious SEO strategies, it can actually do you more harm than good.

So your goal is to find websites that have what in the SEO world is called "High Authority" and to get your site listed on their site.

What is the easiest way to identify a High Authority sites? Simple... PageRank. The higher the PageRank a site has, the more value you'll get from a link at that site.

Where do you find these elusive "High Authority" sites, so you can get yourself listed on them? Well, here are a few places to start:
  1. Submit your site to the top Web Directories

    Google is constantly scanning the top Web directories to see what new sites they have listed. If they find your website in one of these directories, there's a good chance they'll add it to their own listings.

    Google's assumption is simply that if a human reviewed your website and placed it in their directory, then it must be good.

    Here are just a few of the top directories to start with:

      • Yahoo Directory
      • Best of the Web
      • Go Guides
      • DMOZ
      • Gimpsy

    All of these directories (except DMOZ), do charge a submission fee, but it is typically money well spent.

  2. Write quality articles and then submit them to the Web's top article directories

    Just make sure you include a link that leads back to your own website. A great place to do this is in an "About the Author" blurb at end of the article.

    The beauty of this strategy is, not only will you get a link pointing to your site from the article directory, if anyone decides to post your article on their site as well, you'll get even more links!

    If you know of any high-traffic websites that are popular with your target market, you should contact them directly and offer to write an original article full of great content they can post on their site. Chances are they'll go for it -- most webmasters understand the value of regularly posting fresh new content on their sites!

  3. Comment in popular industry forums and blogs

    This is a great free way to get more links pointing back to your site. All you have to do is include a link to your site in your signature block, and then post away!

    Note: Google doesn't take links in blog comments into account when it's determining your PageRank. However, its spiders will follow such links to see where they lead -- so if your primary goal is simply to get indexed by Google, this is an excellent strategy.
If you do these three things, you will dramatically increase your chance of getting your site listed in Google in as short a time as possible. You can even use these strategies to dramatically increasing the rankings of an existing website!
