Please Learn From My Mistakes!

Lots of people know how to write, but not everyone knows how to write well, especially when it comes to writing an article for publication. In these instances, it is imperative that what is written be as error free as possible. Once something is printed, it cannot be corrected, and unfortunately, people will notice. Here are a few things I have learned not to do when writing for the general public.


Misspelled Words

Ever written an article, published it, and then discovered you had misspelled a word? Spell-check is a wonderful thing, but it doesn't catch every error. For instance, if a word is spelled correctly but is not being used in the proper context, spell-check is likely to pass right over it. That is what happened to me when I accidentally typed the word "pubic" instead of "public" in the middle of an article. My computer and I both failed to recognize the error, but millions of readers everywhere were treated to a nice, little chuckle on my behalf. That embarrassing incident taught me to always have someone else check my writing before releasing it to print.


Incorrect Word Choice

Some words are not only spelled similarly, but have similar meanings as well. This can lead to a lot of confusion for both writers and readers. Some examples include "it's" versus "its" and "may be" versus "maybe". Again, these are things that may not be recognized by spell-check software. Even if the distinctions between the words are subtle, it is still very important that they be used correctly. Somebody, somewhere will not only notice the mistake, but will have no problem pointing it out to whoever will listen. It is always better to be certain about a word's proper use before committing it to print, than to learn about the error from a reader after the fact. Sometimes, the dictionary is a writer's best friend.


Big Words and Lengthy Sentences

In college I studied mostly English and Philosophy. I wrote more papers than I care to remember, but one thing I do recall is being encouraged to write a variety of different sentence lengths and to be creative in my word choices. I was instructed to write down my deepest thoughts as thoroughly as possible and not be afraid to over-explain them. This may have been great advice for writing a theme or an essay, but it doesn't go over very well with most media publications.

I have found that people who read newspapers or internet articles want to be able to find information quickly. They tend to scan articles first to see if they want to read the whole thing. College professors may appreciate flowery words and sentences, but the general public prefers a more straightforward approach. Keep it simple, seriously.


Check the Facts

Believe me, there is nothing more embarrassing than spouting off about something, only to have it brought to your attention (by a reader) that your facts are a little off. For instance, I once wrote an article that included a reference to Orson Wells' book 1984. The only problem was, Orson Wells didn't write that book. George Orwell did! I was horrified when I realized what I had done. It no longer mattered what the article was about or how brilliant my observations had been. To those who recognized my mistake, I had lost all credibility.


Tricky Titles

I once read an article entitled "Judy Garland's Favorite Vacation Spot". The first paragraph did mention something about Judy Garland and something about "vacation spots"; but the rest of the article was about traveling in the southwestern United States. In other words, the title was not exactly forthcoming. This type of trickery should be avoided at all costs. It does nothing but irritate readers and create a bad reputation for the writer. There is too much deceit in the world already.


Conclusion

The moral of this story is, when writing for publication or self-promotion, read, reread, and then let someone else read it too. Be aware of problematic words and double-check them. Make sure the article is easy to understand, but most importantly, that it is accurate and truthful. It's true that everyone makes mistakes, but writers must be especially careful to avoid them. Once our words are printed for the world to see, we cannot easily take them back.

7 Web Search Tips for Online Business Owners

Most online business owners are conducting fairly regular web searches. Typically the kind of information that they're seeking include local and national competitors, keyword research, and searches for resources for a particular topic. I recently tried to find a simple tutorial to help my clients conduct better Internet searches. Unfortunately, many of the tutorials that I found were created by academic libraries and provided too much detail and too many options for the simpler kinds of searches that most of us do.

Below are some simple tips to make your online search more effective. Since I do the majority of my searches on Google, some of these tips are Google-specific:

1. Carefully select your search terms. Instead of using broad or general terms that will return thousands of possible sites, try to use terms that are very specific to your topic. One way to narrow your terms is to review relevant sites you've already discovered and identify search terms from those sites.

2. Use quotation marks. If you're seeking a specific phrase, like "Internet marketing coach", enclose the term in quotation marks. Called a forced phrase search, this tells the search engine to return only entries that contain these words in this order. Sometimes searches without the quotes return similar entries, but you could also get an unrelated entry like, "...Internet that makes it easier on marketing for the athletic coach.."

3. Use Boolean operators. Boolean operators are words that allow you to combine search terms in most search engines. The most commonly used ones are:

AND -- AND tells the search engine to find both terms on the same site. For instance, entering "business AND ethics" would instruct the search engine to find web pages that contain both terms, "business" and "ethics." You can also use the '"+" sign for this, as in "business" + "ethics"

OR -- OR tells the search engine to find one term or the other. Entering "business OR ethics" would cause the search engine to look for web pages that contain either the word "business" or the word "ethics," but not necessarily both words. If you use this combination, be prepared for the search engine to return thousands of sites.

NOT -- NOT tells the search engine to find pages that contain the first word but not the second. This instruction is helpful when you know your search term is likely to appear with another term that does not interest you, like "golf NOT cart". You can also use the "-" sign for this, as in "golf -cart".

4. Site search. This helps you search for a phrase on a particular site. The command for this is site:URL "keyphrase". So, if you wanted to search the Houston Chronicle for mentions of Anna Nicole Smith, you would enter the following: site:chron.com "Anna Nicole Smith".

5. Search within a URL. Many times as you're thinking about buying a domain name, you want to find who may be using a particular term as a part of their domain name. Use the inURL code for this. For example, if you wanted to find all the URLs that contained the word "career" in Google, you would enter the following: inurl:career

6. Use a metasearch engine. Instead of trying to search various search engines separately, use a meta search engine. My favorite is Dogpile.com, which searches Google, Yahoo, MSN and Ask.

7. Give yourself a time limit. I've started searches and have had hours disappear in what seems to be minutes. Set up a timer to notify you 15 minutes into your search. You can then determine if you are wasting your time on a particular search strategy, spending too much time or a site, or assess if you need to refocus the search.

4 Easy Steps to Successful Web Site Marketing

Marilyn is a psychologist who called to find out how to increase the 'sales' from her web site. She's determined to use her web site to build a tele-consulting business so she can give up the commute from New Jersey to her Manhattan office.

She had a professional-looking web site that was getting a good number of visitors, but very few of them were calling her, much less signing up for her services.

Why not? Why weren't prospects visiting her web site and then immediately picking up the phone? And what could she do about it?

Website marketing is about attracting attention; moving people to become prospects, to try your products and services and to sign up for your top end services or buy everything you sell. For many it can seem complex and overwhelming but it's simply a matter of helping people move from point A to point B to point C.

Every web site and business owner wants their prospects to become high paying clients, but most web sites don't provide prospects with pathways to follow from point A to B and to C, to become mid-level or super clients.

Let me explain...

Imagine that you're opening a new restaurant in a three-story building. The first floor is the lobby or waiting area. Moving up to the second floor, customers can order individual items from your menu a la carte; the prices range from $5 to $19. Customers who move up to the third floor can enjoy a spectacular view and a 4 course, fixed price dinner served with wine for $70.

You're ready to open the doors and start making money. There's just one problem. The architect for your building didn't include any staircases or elevators. People can't move from one floor to the next.

Of course, no one would build a restaurant like that but in fact, that is how many online and consulting business are structured. One of the biggest marketing mistakes people make is not providing prospects with options for moving from point A to B to C. In many cases the pathways don't exist or the doors to the stairs aren't obvious.

Ready for your web site marketing to generate more paying customers and or super clients?

Want to make it easy for prospects to become super clients? Marketing pundits will tell you that to get prospects to buy your top end services, you first need to get them to buy your $29 product, then your $200 product, and then these customers will be ready to spend thousands.

It's true you need to create simple and obvious pathways for prospects to follow to become clients, but don't take this linear pathway idea too literally. While some customers will follow it, others won't. Give your prospects multiple ways to try out your products and services.

Structure your web site marketing pathways with the following in mind:

1. Your first marketing goal is to get people in the door so they can get to know you. The best way to do that is to give something away for free. Offer prospects something they want. If you are opening a restaurant, free beer or wine would be a start. Online, free reports, online courses, or audio and video files can be successful offers. Or if you sell products, contests, and special offers work.

2. Once you've got a prospect interested, the temptation is to try to make a sale right away. Don't. Take a deep breath and count to three. Rushing the sale can kill it. Your prospects will become paying clients when they know you, trust you and are sure you can help them.

You've gotten their attention with your free offer. Now educate them about the core areas where you can provide assistance. Give prospects a sample of your best goods. Finally, explain the solutions you offer in terms of their problems and how you solve them.

3. Your freebies will attract three basic types of prospects: people who like freebies and aren't buyers; people who have limited budgets but will buy your entry and mid-level products; and people who have unlimited funds and may buy one of your entry-level products or may jump right to your top end services.

4. You'll make the most money from people who buy everything you sell or who spend tens of thousands of dollars on our services, so how can you get more people to become these super clients?

Every web site and business owner wants their prospects to become high paying clients. The more you give away, the more prospects will move from testing your free stuff to immediately becoming your best clients.

Imagine if instead of just offering free peanuts in the lobby of your restaurant, you offered a sampling of the best appetizers served on the top floor along with wine to match. More people would be likely to become high-end spenders on their first visit, assuming your building has stairs or a high-speed elevator. Yes, your freebie will cost you more but you'll make a lot more if you can motivate prospects to spend two to three times more.

Does your web site marketing provide paths for prospects to become super clients? Take a minute to answer these questions:

1. What do you do to attract prospects, e.g. to get them in the door?

2. If you sell pricey products or services, do you have a low-cost way for people to get hooked on buying from you?

3. What pathways do you provide to move first-time customers to become second time customers and spend more?

4. Do you provide enough for free to entice some prospects to immediately become super clients?
