I just finished teaching an intensive 2-day workshop in
London, England about creating ebooks and operating your own
profitable online info-publishing business on a shoestring
budget.

As I stood in front of a crowd almost 5,000 miles from home,
I realized (yet again) that the Internet represents the
great business equalizer of the 21st century.

Anyone with a great idea and the guts and patience to
persevere and act on that idea can succeed online, often
beating out much larger companies that can't adapt quickly
enough to prosper or profit.

I also realized while standing in front of the crowd that
despite arguments to the contrary, people all over the world
buy and sell online for exactly the same reasons
.

Anyone who tells you that "My market is different" or "It
doesn't work that way in my country
" has forgotten the basic
rules for selling online.

Bottom line: Anyone selling anything online - regardless of
their location - must obey the following "rules" or risk
many heartaches and an empty wallet.

** Targeted Audience **
What exactly do your customers want and what words do they
use to describe the products and services they will
purchase?

Don't assume you know how and what they want to buy - ask
them!

From this research you will determine the "keywords" your
customers will use to find your business while surfing and
using search engines.

You should then focus completely on these keywords while
constructing your entire web presence and advertising
campaigns.

** Focused Website **
Your website should center exclusively on those issues
directly related to what you sell online.

If you sell "purple widgets" then only write about the
characteristics, features and benefits of using your purple
widgets.

Take great care in your copy writing to keep your text
focused on one subject per web page and make liberal use of
your keywords and their synonyms.

Constructing your "mini sites" in this manner will aid you
greatly in keeping people focused on your sales message long
enough to make a buying decision.

** Targeted Traffic! **
A website without visitors rates the same as designing and
constructing a 30-foot billboard and then hiding it in your
basement instead of setting it by the highway.

Don't fall victim to traffic scams which promise thousands
of visitors for only $100.

Those schemes don't work because the traffic isn't targeted.
http://AdWords.Google.com makes the best place to start
getting targeted visitors because you only pay for the
visitors you actually receive (pay-per-click), not for the
ads you run.

** Build Relationships **
Successful online businesses build relationships with their
customers and prospects.

You can only do this if you stay in touch with them through
value-added mailings, emails, and updates.

Online businesses whose only communication involves repeated
"pitches" or opportunities to spend money don't fare as well
in the long haul.

A group of loyal customers and subscribers will sustain an
online business owner much longer than a fat advertising
budget ever could.

** Stay Informed **
Understand that creating a successful online business
requires commitment to a process of constant promotion and
continuous education.

You must stay current on cost-effective promotion techniques
for driving traffic to your site as well as any factors
specifically affecting your market online.

Is Internet marketing just another JOB?

There was a thread on my forum this week in which a few
members were discussing how many hours they spent working
on their online businesses.

A handful of members admitted to putting in over 40 hours
per week working online and I have to say, this is not
uncommon. When I first started my Internet businesses, it
was normal for me to work into the early hours and then
grab a couple of hours sleep before getting up to squeeze
another hour in before I went to my real job. When I left
my job and went full-time, my hours online increased
dramatically.

Even today (when so many of my day to day tasks are
automated) I still work a minimum of 35 hours a week and
this can rise to over 100 hours if I have a specific
project on the go. It's not just me - you will find that
most successful online marketers work some serious hours,
probably many more than they ever did in any 'proper' job.

So is this online business thing just a big con? By
setting up a successful Internet business are you merely
committing yourself to a different type of job? Possibly
yes but at least you get to do things on your own terms :-)

By pure coincidence, I noticed another thread in a
completely different forum this week in which someone was
asking a very similar question but in a slightly different
way. The lady in question had given herself a target of
earning (from memory) $2000 a month from her online
business efforts. The last couple of months she had hit
this target one or two days before the end of the month.
This month however, she had already made the $2000 by the
18th. Her question was simply this, 'What do I do now? Do
I continue working/promoting in order to earn more money or
do I take the rest of the month off?' It's a fair question
- whenever anyone talks about working online, they nearly
always state that they can take as much time off as they
want and the 'Internet lifestyle' dictates that once you
have earned your salary for the month, you should spend the
rest of the month lying on a beach somewhere!

Of course, it doesn't happen like this and although it
would be nice to stop working on the 18th each month, it
makes more sense to 'make hay while the sun shines' and
continue pulling in the money. At the end of the day,
every penny that you earn today puts you closer to complete
retirement (as long as you are doing sensible things with
some of your money such as saving and investing!)

One of the responses to the above post was a great little
story which I have heard before and I thought I would share
with you. It will give you something to think about and
will help focus your mind as you set goals and targets in
respect of your business and your life in general.....

One day a fisherman was lying on a beautiful beach with his
fishing pole propped up in the sand and his solitary line
cast out into the sparkling blue surf. He was enjoying the
warmth of the afternoon sun and the prospect of catching a
fish.

About that time, a businessman came walking down the beach
trying to relieve some of the stress of his workday. He
noticed the fisherman sitting on the beach and decided to
find out why this fisherman was fishing instead of working
harder to make a living for himself and his family.

"You aren't going to catch many fish that way" said the
businessman to the fisherman, "you should be working rather
than lying on the beach!"

The fisherman looked up at the businessman, smiled and
replied, "And what will my reward be?"

"Well, you can get bigger nets and catch more fish!" was
the businessman's answer.

"And then what will my reward be?" asked the fisherman,
still smiling.

The businessman replied, "You will make money and you'll be
able to buy a boat which will then result in larger catches
of fish!"

"And then what will my reward be?" asked the fisherman
again.

The businessman was beginning to get a little irritated
with the fisherman's questions. "You can buy a bigger boat
and hire some people to work for you!" he said.

"And then what will my reward be?" repeated the fisherman.

The businessman was getting angry. "Don't you understand?
You can build up a fleet of fishing boats, sail all over
the world, and let all your employees catch fish for you!"

Once again the fisherman asked, "And then what will my
reward be?"

The businessman was red with rage and shouted at the
fisherman, "Don't you understand that you can become so
rich that you will never have to work for your living
again! You can spend all the rest of your days sitting on
this beach looking at the sunset. You won't have a care in
the world!"

The fisherman, still smiling, looked up and said...

"And what do you think I'm doing right now ??"

Five Steps to Successful Online Selling

Each year, Internet users purchase billions of dollars worth
of products and services online, according to Web researcher
eMarketer. Is your business getting its share of the pie?

You can capitalize on the power of the Internet, if you follow
these four important steps to successful online selling.

Step 1: Build a site with good design and content

Create a Website with a design that's attractive, well-organized
and easy to navigate. This will make it easier and faster for
site visitors to find their way around - and shop for your
products or services.

And remember: Pictures tell; words sell. So your site also must
offer content that makes site visitors want to stick around. You
should present clear, simple and useful information.so people
will want to buy from you.

Step 2: Get ecommerce-ready

Obviously, you need to accept credit cards, checks and other
forms of payments online. This will allow you business to tap
into a vast marketplace where millions of consumers spend
billions of dollars each year. Plus, you'll be able to make more,
larger and impulse sales, as well as enjoy improved cash flow,
enhanced credibility and a competitive edge.

You need four key ingredients to successfully ring up online
sales:

1. A merchant account for business owners.

2. Shopping cart software that allows customers to collect and
pay for items from your online store.

3. A payment gateway to processes your customers' credit cards
and communicate between the merchant's Website, the bank holding
the merchant account, and the bank holding the financial records
of the customer.

4. A secure Website that is communicating with a payment gateway
that, in turn, is communicating with a banking computer system.

Step 3: Submit your site to major search engines

Once your site is equipped to sell online, it's critical to
submit your Web address to search engines. Eight out of 10 people
surfing the Web use search engines or search directories to
navigate their way around online, according to the eMarketing
Association. And 54 percent of experienced online shoppers
primarily rely on a search engine when trying to find a product
to purchase online, says Jupiter Communications.

At the very least, you should submit your site to top U.S. search
tools like Yahoo, Google, the Open Directory, MSN, Overture and
Ask Jeeves.

Step 4: Use email to stimulate online sales

Email is used by 96 percent of Internet users, making it the
ideal tool to advertise your Website. You can use email marketing
to send electronic newsletters, letters, announcements,
promotions, sales and customer support.

An email marketing campaign is easier, cheaper and faster to
implement than a traditional direct mail promotion. Plus, the
response rate of the typical email campaign easily outpaces that
of conventional mailings. Email click-through rates can exceed 20
percent, while conventional direct mail campaign responses are 2
percent, at best.

Step 5: Unleash the power of auto responders to boost online
sales

Auto responders let you automatically reply to incoming email
requests, so you can instantly respond to the needs of existing
and potential customers. They can be your most powerful weapon
for boosting online sales.

Here's why: Sixty percent of a site's visitors who eventually end
up buying a product or service don't do so on their first visit,
says Auto responder Review.com. And in fact, 80 percent of all
sales are made on the fifth through twelfth contact with a
prospect, according to the National Sales Executive Association.

So if you don't use an auto responder or some other way to follow
up with potential customers, you can miss out on up to 80 percent
of your potential online sales.

Advertising. Curse? Money hole? Or powerful venue?

It seems so obvious: where else, for a few hundred dollars, could
you get in front of thousands of people? And it's true that many
of them are really wanting what you're offering.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of advertising ends up being
good to wrap fish in, and not much else. People cry up "But it's
getting me exposure," and that's true, to a point. However, is it
really increasing sales? Is it really getting people the help
they need?

Every time I look through a newspaper, especially the alternative
papers, I see so many ads, and my heart feels a little sad.
Because I know behind most of those ads there is a jewel of a
human being, really wanting to help. But the ad isn't making the
connection at all.

Let's think about it for a minute before you rush to get your
hard-earned money in before the publication deadline. What's
going on for the person reading the newspaper?

First: they've seen it all before. Second: your offer is probably
between the 100th and 1000th (literally) that they've seen today.
Third: even if they are an ideal prospect for you, they are
probably thinking about something other than your business.

Because of this overwhelm, most advertisers try to keep turning
the volume up higher and higher. I just opened up an alternative
magazine randomly to a two page spread of ads. Out of 16 ads,
12 of them have some "special offer" of one sort or another. And
14 of them are making a direct pitch to have you "schedule an
appointment" or otherwise buy something now. Of the other two,
one is a restaurant, and the other doesn't make any kind of offer
at all.

Does it work? No, it doesn't work. I've called people to find out
how their ads were working for them, and they told me: "I get a
couple of calls from it, maybe."

Remember that people only buy when they feel safe enough- when
the relationship has built to the point where they can trust
their initial attraction.


Here's The Foundation You Need To Make Your Ad Effective:

* Know the Three Journeys.

The First Journey is when a stranger becomes interested in your
business, and chooses to become a prospect. A prospect who is
looking for gold in your business.

The Second Journey is when that prospect spends time in direct
relationship with your business, and when they see enough gold,
they become a customer.

The Third Journey is when they've had an ecstatic experience as a
customer, and want to help other people find the gold, so they
become a raving fan.

Advertising is First Journey marketing. Your only goal in
advertising should be to show enough gold to get them to
want to be a prospect. Forget about selling them anything.

How do you show them the gold?


Keys to Effective Advertising

* Talk to one person, and call their name.

On a crowded Manhattan street, elbow-to-elbow with a sea of
people, I still heard someone speak in a conversational voice-
"Mark." I turned my head around. Of course they were talking to
someone else, but it still caught my attention.

Your ad needs to speak to one person, and call their name. In
marketing, the next best thing to a personal name is your Who and
What. "Golfers"=who "is knee pain affecting your swing?"= what.

* Educate them in a helpful way.

If you have room, take the time to maybe explain one point that
will be helpful for them in the problem they are facing. For
smaller ads you can just point them towards a web page where you
want to educate them about something helpful.

For instance: "Most pain is actually caused by stress. Stopping
the stress means decreasing or stopping the pain. Right now, just
notice your knee pain. See if you can notice where your legs and
hips feel tense, and breathe into the tension. As it relaxes, see
how the pain feels." If you have more space, you can go into more
detail.

* Offer a trade: their contact information for something
valuable.

"Of course, your knee pain isn't gone completely. This is just a
clue. If you'd like a free article, with illustrations, on how to
decrease knee pain and help your swing, just go to
www.golfkneepain.com. And, we'll give you an additional golf
swing tip every week."

* Finally, don't ignore design.

Keep it simple. In a loud, overcrowded world, simplicity and
straightforwardness have the best chance of being noticed. Use
plenty of white space. Easy-to-read fonts, avoid cursive or fancy
fonts, and avoid complicated patterns.

Are You Wasting Time and Money Marketing to the Wrong People?

One of the biggest mistakes I see consultants, coaches and
professionals make is to be unclear about who their ideal
client is, and to carry out their marketing without any
specific definition of their target market. In fact, most
are hedging their bets and trying to appeal to everybody.

Intuitively, this seems the right way to go. We might
presume that the more people you can appeal to, the more
likely you are to get business. It's the law of large
numbers - if you throw enough darts at the board, then
eventually you'll hit the bullseye.

However, this approach has a number of drawbacks. First,
when you try to please everybody, you end up pleasing
nobody. Your marketing message will be bland and, quite
likely, meaningless to everyone that is exposed to it.
Secondly, trying to market to an undefined group of people
is extremely hard work and involves a lot of wasted energy
and expense. How will you know where to place your ads, who
to send direct mail to, where to network, who to call or
who you want to attract to your website? Thirdly, if you
don't specialise in any way, then you'll never build up
specific expertise in any particular area or get paid the
premium that specialists get paid.

So, if you haven't already, I suggest that you define your
precise target market and start building up a profile of
the ideal client.

Who is NOT an ideal client?

For a lot of people, who they think is their ideal client
and who genuinely is an ideal client may be world's apart.

Here's a list of types of businesses or consumers you
probably don't want to target:

Price-shoppers: People who are shopping on price are very,
very rarely your ideal client. Unless you have a business
model that allows you to somehow "mass produce" services
and leverage your time, then you'll never create your dream
lifestyle or large pension fund working for price shoppers.
My experience, and that of thousands of other service
providers, is that "cheapskate" clients are often more
demanding, take up more of your precious time and cause
more headaches than clients who are looking for a premium
service.

People who you think "need" your services: Virtually every
small business I come across could use my know-how and
expertise to improve their marketing. I could surmise that
they "need" what I have to offer. However, there is an
abundance of research that shows that people rarely buy
what they need, but nearly always buy what they "want"
(finances permitting). This is a critical distinction. You
may be meeting people all the time who you feel "need" what
you provide, but until such time as they actually want it,
they're unlikely to buy, and therefore your time spent
marketing to them and building the relationship is largely
wasted.

People who can't comfortably afford your services: You may
meet people who both need and want your services, but if
they can't comfortably afford them, then it's going to be
an uphill battle proving the value of what you do and why
they should invest. If they do decide to buy your services
then they may also become "problem child" clients.

Sometimes you will get business from people who can't
comfortably afford your services, but to actively target
them and to spend too much time wooing them is likely a
false economy. Your marketing efforts and resources will be
better spent when aimed at a market that can easily afford
you. This market will also perceive less risk in hiring
you, as they can more easily rationalise the purchase to
themselves.

People who don't see you as credible: 20th century
marketing has taught most of us to be sceptical. Because
people have made bad purchasing decisions in the past, and
sometimes been outright ripped off, they're wary of how
they spend their money and who they spend it with. This is
true whether they're a corporate buyer (they don't want to
lose face or lose their job) or a consumer. They'll look to
minimise their risks, and the easiest way of doing that is
by buying from someone they trust who has a substantial
amount of credibility. This goes hand in hand with
positioning yourself as a specialist and expert in your
field - high end clients who are willing to pay high fees
will want reassurance that you can produce the results you
claim to produce.

People who don't truly want change: As a service provider,
it's highly likely that what you do involves some kind of
change on the part of your clients. If you're a consultant
or coach, then your clients will probably have to change
what they do or how they think in order to implement the
strategies, tools and techniques that you advise them to
use. If you're a professional, then they may need to change
how they do their accounting, how their website works,
their visual identity or their contracts in order to
benefit from the improvements you provide.

If you find yourself speaking to people who show all the
signs of resisting change, then move on! They may pay lip
service to wanting improved results, but if they don't seem
prepared to actually make changes and move with the times,
then they're probably not a good client.

What are the criteria for defining your perfect client?

When you come to defining your target market and ideal
client, here are the factors to consider:

* Who's prepared to pay a premium for the outcome you
provide?
* Who wants what you offer, rather than who needs what you
offer?
* Who can comfortably afford your services?
* Who trusts you and sees you as credible?
* Who's willing to embrace the change you represent?

And finally, one last distinction - and this may be the
most important one. You'll build your own success more
rapidly when you spend your time marketing to businesses
and people who are already successful but want to move to
the next level, than if you target businesses or people who
are struggling.This may seem counter-intuitive. After all,
aren't those who are struggling the ones who most need your
help? Yes, they probably do need your help the most.
However, if they don't want it, or aren't prepared to pay
for it, then you're wasting your time and money marketing
to them. Not only that, but the people and businesses that
need your help because they're in a mess probably got into
their predicament by being short-sighted and not wanting to
invest in professional help at the appropriate time. This
points to them not having a success mindset or wanting to
implement change, which means that not only will it be a
harder sale, but they're less likely to implement the
changes you advise in order to become good success stories
for you.

And at the end of the day, if you want to build a
successful business, it pays to surround yourself with
successful people, especially your clients!

Here are some examples of these principles in action:

1. The desperate prospect I spoke to one potential client,
who was on the brink of bankruptcy, who wanted me to help
him with some marketing materials. I thought his business
model was basically flawed and therefore he'd probably
never see a good return on his investment in my services
within the brief he'd given me. It was unlikely that he'd
want to pay my fees, and I couldn't guarantee him a result
in the kind of time frame he needed to prevent the
bankruptcy. I decided not to take the conversation any
further on the basis that I didn't want his money if it
might become a contributing factor to his bankruptcy and
because I wasn't convinced that he was heading in the right
direction.

Although he wanted what I was offering, I didn't think he
could comfortably afford my services or get the returns he
needed in such a tight timeframe.

2. The sceptical prospect I had a conversation with a
potential client who seemed to have some good services, but
was struggling to sell them. He really needed marketing
help because he was running all over town (quite literally)
presenting proposals to people who weren't buying and was
struggling to make his business model work. I suggested a
number of changes and actions he could take, but he
resisted each and every one. Not long into the conversation
I felt my energy drop and a sense of despair overwhelm me.
This is usually a really bad sign!

This guy sells services that could really help a lot of
people, but his depressed attitude and resistance to every
thing I said meant that he was never likely to become
wildly successful or build the exit strategy he wanted. Not
only that, but he claimed that he'd heard it all before!
This begs the question "so why didn't you act on it the
first time you heard it"? This prospect needed what I was
offering, but didn't want it. He didn't have a success
mindset, and was therefore unlikely to ever really
appreciate the value of the change I was offering him.

3. The optimistic client Stefan recognised his own
limitations when it came to marketing. He knew in his heart
that he had a good product and service, but was struggling
to get his message out to the right people and in the right
way. Although he had regular work coming in from a few
reliable sources, he recognised the need to shore up his
foundations by reaching more people and consistently
bringing in new client from other efforts.

Stefan signed up for my Client Attraction Blueprint
programme right away, and set about doing the exercises and
taking on board the advice I offered him. He is now reaping
the rewards through having a marketing plan that works for
him and a much clearer idea of who he should be targeting,
and where he should expend his marketing efforts, time and
money.

Stefan wanted what I was offering. He was open to change,
and happy to be directed. Although he didn't fit the
criterion of easily affording my services, he was prepared
to invest in them anyway because he saw the long term
advantages.

What about you? Are you targeting the people who trust you,
see you as credible, who want what you offer and are
willing to pay to gain the benefits of your solution? Are
you positioning yourself as an expert and working to
attract other like-minded and successful people to your
business, or are you struggling to sell your services to a
sceptical and reluctant market? Could you take your
business to the next level by clearly defining the ideal
client and then ensuring that all of your marketing
efforts, particularly your message, are tailored to the
wants and aspirations of that market?
